From cereal to wine, and from washing up liquid to ice creams, the short-shelf-life items we purchase every day for rapid consumption are known as ‘fast-moving consumer goods’ (FMCG). These often low-cost products are sold in such huge numbers, meaning that the benefits of making, moving, advertising and selling them are enormous.

Online sales of food are rising rapidly, with the International Data Group (IDG) predicting that the sector in the UK will grow 51 per cent by 2023 to 7.9 per cent of the total market. New technologies develop all the time, as do new products, and logistics will become increasingly important post-Brexit as established supply chains are disrupted and need rethinking.
